Assimilated - 6-2-2008 21:39:44 Yesterday, we received a patient from the ICU. A few weeks ago he was on our unit and began bleeding profusely from his brand new (poorly healing) ostomy and large (poorly healing) incision. Stories from that night usually include the words, “blood,” “squirting,” and “everywhere.” It wasn’t pretty; he was rushed to the ICU; he [...]

Robo Vacuum: Your crumbs will be assimilated - 6-5-2008 15:45:31 Resistance is futile. Your crumbs will be assimilated and absorbed with these little robo vacuums. Which is appropriate, since these little guys look a bit on the obese side. They should probably do some exercise. But they can’t.
They don’t do anything but suck up your crumbs. Their arms don’t even move much. But there’s [...] more »

Sometimes it is Easy to See the Future - 5 - 14-9-2007 3:52:00 To quote from one of the four prior posts with this title:
“While in many areas it might be difficult to see into the future, in the area of technology the future can be readily seen. The speed of technological invention and innovation moves so quickly that we have barely assimilated a recent breakthrough when another shows [...] more »

siouxsie sioux has turned 50..and recorded/released a new album.. - 26-8-2007 20:52:18 (here she is interviewed..)
“..Siouxsie turned 50 in May. Her influence – on the likes of Björk, PJ Harvey, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bat for Lashes – has never been more apparent, though she reckons she wouldn’t last long if she was emerging now.
Innovators, these days, “get assimilated”, she says, “eaten up and spat out. [...] more »

Beautiful quote regarding Culture - 22-7-2007 9:43:01 “Culture is not merely a common code or even a common catalogue of answers to recurring problems; it is a common set of previously assimilated master patterns from which, by an ‘art of invention’ similar to that involved in the writing of music, an infinite number of individuaol patterns directly applicable to specific situations are [...] more »

Is This a Dagger Which I See Before Me? - 15-7-2007 5:40:07 Salaam ‘Alaikum 1. The (inexplicable) popularity of the world’s ugliest shoes. You know what’s double ugly? When they’re worn with gauchos. 2. Muslim American adults may, on the whole, be well assimilated, but there is increasing evidence that our children are alienated from our collective Islamic heritage (ie, the religious one). And it’s [...] more »

Back-pay delays for health staff 13/05/07 - 13-5-2007 11:08:33 The health board in the Western Isles has denied ongoing financial difficulties are to blame for delays to some staff receiving back-pay. The authority said, by the end of May, 96% of re-graded staff would have been assimilated. The delays affect about 40 staff who received new gradings as part of the government's Agenda For Change reforms. more »

yes, we are - 30-8-2006 3:40:34 the WaPo has an essay claiming that American muslims are not as assimilated as one might think. However, the problem here is the definition of "assimilated". In the lead graf, the author concedes, I found few signs of London-style radicalism among Muslims in the United States. At the same time, the real story of American Muslims is one of accelerating alienation from the mainstream of U.S. life, with Muslims in this country choosing their Islamic identity over their American one. Emphasis mine, which I think rather undercuts the headline. We ARE as assimilate... more »

Companies of Ex-Google Employees - 31-3-2008 3:48:17 Wired's Betsy Schiffman compiled a list of ex-Google employees doing their own start-ups now or joining companies... which may or may not become Google competition. From Vanessa Fox to Kevin Fox, Biz Stone to Evan Williams, Jess Lee and others. An "attack against the mother ship," as Henry Blodget called it.
Then again, we might find that some of these spaceships may become assimilated, after all -- i.e., Google buying those start-ups that turn out to be successful. Or perhaps, any such acquisition may be enough of a demoralizing factor to those who work at Google that it could be risky for Google's management to consider; it may almost equal telling th ... more »

Culture: Libya Through the Ages Part I: Ancient Libya - 14-9-2007 16:41:04 Some lands are so ancient, it's like they're forever new. Libya's
like that - from Neolithic times before the dawn of history, down
through Egyptians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, and Muslims, the
ancient peoples of Libya's coasts and deserts assimilated new ideas and
made trade worthy accommodation (eventually) with all comers. The
political entity we think of as a somewhat-misshapen box on Africa's
Mediterranean shore only came into existence in 1951; prior to that,
Libya had, like so many other lands in regions of overlapping imperial
interests, changed hands many times as the powerful waxed and
waned... [more »
