Preteen Summit - Food for Thought - 30-11-2007 22:21:20 I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon the other day sponsored by the Preteen Alliance and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital called "What does growing up have to do with my future? Important questions on the minds of preteen and strategies for answering them." The speakers were Robert Lehman, MD and Julie Metzger, RN, MN, both specialists in adolescent health care and parent-child...

Not so hot - 31-5-2007 18:11:28 The BBC preteen pop-and-pink magazine, It's Hot, is going to close at the end of June. The spin-off from the equally defunct Live & Kicking magazine is blaming its demise on bloody kids using the internet rather than paper and pens; it's been running for the past five years. more »

Help Protect Your Preteen Or Teen From Serious Diseases - 24-8-2007 18:54:38 Sonia Manzano, "Maria" from "Sesame Street," reminds parents about the importance of making sure vaccinations for their preteens and teens are up-to-date.
Topsail Island, NC - (NAPSA)-Vaccinations are not just for babies and young children. In fact, health experts recommend several vaccinations for preteens and teens. These shots can help protect them from serious diseases, such [...] more »

Missing Results on Yahoo.it - 10-5-2006 20:25:41 Search for the word "bullshit" on Yahoo.com and you get over 12 million results... but search for it on Yahoo Italy and you'll get no results at all (safe-search or not). Yahoo.it also doesn't have a single result -- except maybe directory results -- for words like "shit", "fuck", or "preteen". Do we see an Italian censorship law in action here shielding surfers from terms that may hit on pornography, illegal stuff, or general rudeness? There is no trace of Yahoo telling what happens on their results page.

Vittoria girl a real CHAMP War Amps helps her connect with other amputees CANADA - 2-6-2006 19:11:25 Abbey McGuire is an ordinary 12-year-old girl with a big smile and her hair in a ponytail. She likes to chat with girls her age on the Internet. There are two in particular she bonds with, and McGuire completes the trio.
The only thing that sets her and her friends apart from any other preteen is that the friends met at a War Amps seminar. Together, they share a unique trait. They are all amputees. There is also an uplifting term for them, and kids like it: CHAMPs.

Exploring differences in preteen social networking sites - 27-3-2008 23:50:41 I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Bob Sprankle, Kevin Jarrett, and Maria Knee discuss WebKinz along with a wide variety of other “tween” social networking websites in Bob’s Bit by Bit podcast #63 this week during my commutes in the car. A Heartwarming, Yet Sad Story: - 23-4-2007 5:25:30 As a young girl growing up in an idyllic, woodsy suburban town due west of Boston, despite problems that resulted in much difficulty in my relating/interacting with other people, I did many, if not most of the things that other kids did. During my preteen years, especially during the summer months, the kids on our street, including me and my sister, would often get together, playing things such as jump-rope, hop-scotch and 10-20, Chinese jumprope, hide-and-seek, statue, even "cowboys and Indians", and many other games.

On Hannah Montana tickets - 21-10-2007 0:21:43 Of course, the true hysteria in the concert world these days surrounds getting Hannah Montana tickets. The St Louis Post Dispatch just the other day ran a picture of some 8 and 9 year old girls who are rabid fans of Hannah Montana. Since I have no reason to watch the show, I have no idea how Walt Disney created this phenomenon. The last time preteen girls were the focus of such scrutiny for their musical tastes, it was 25 years ago and the press was all upset because little girls were Madonna wannabees. more »

RIAA FINDS SOMEONE ELSE TO SUE - 17-5-2006 13:03:30 Mopping up some of the few lawyers not already suing the dead and preteen, the RIAA has now launched legal actions against XM Radio. The music industry cartel believes that, since you can store some programming in one or two XM radio model's memory, that makes it an iPod-like device rather than a radio, and as such, there should be some extra cash given to them. XM, however, believes otherwise. Naturally, the RIAA is being reasonable and just demanding USD150,000 for each song stored by XM subscribers - representing, we imagine, 79c for a lost sale on iTunes and USD149,... more »

Why Google Hand Editing Seems Random - 20-9-2007 15:10:42 Many people wonder why Google hand editing seems random or incomplete, and why some of the best channels get edited while worse stuff is left untouched. Here are some of the reasons Google does a poor job equitably policing the web:
The web it too large to police and engineer time is expensive.
Policing certain segments produces unwanted blowback. How often do large corporations or influential bloggers get policed? (It is rare, and when it happens, it is sold as a side effect of feature for users.)
When issues become popular they get prioritized. Many times Google won't react unless they feel they are forc more »

Top (Preteen) Chefs - 26-7-2007 22:47:00 Writing about culinarily gifted kids always dances on that narrow dividing line between cute and ipecac. This month’s Food & Wine has a feature that comes in (just barely) on the cute side of the divide, documenting the winners of its Ultimate Kid Cook Contest. Although ultimate implies that the losers face death, the contest takes a lighter approach, giving the two grand-prize winners $170 in cooking tools and leaving the losers unscathed.
The accompanying story pokes around in the m more »

Rihanna's "Umbrella": Wartime Pop Song? - 24-7-2007 19:41:00 You can't walk down a street without running into someone - whether preteen, grandma, or hot dog vendor - singing some part of Rihanna's "Umbrella." Aloud. And loud. Ella, ella, eh, eh, eh, eh. And so it goes. The single's had an interminable presence since it debuted less than four months ago, as it's hovered at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for no less than 14 weeks. Its ebullient hook and strong emotion also helped redefine Young Ms. Fenty into a bona fide, larger-than-life pop vixen - Little Miss Sunshine, as it were. But "Umbrella" was not initially meant as a love note from Rihanna to her man-friends. "Umbrella" scribe Terius Nash, aka the Dream, wrote it as a wartime lull more »
